The undoctored picture was taken by Detroit News photographer Steve Perez on 12 July 2009 . The Navy F/A-18 Hornet from Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach made a scheduled flyover to entertain crowds along the Detroit River that were there to watch the American Power Boat Association Gold Cup powerboat races . Just as the fighter turned sideways and flew past the apartments, Perez took this photograph . And because of the photographers position and the flattening effect of a two dimensional telephoto lens, the jet appears to be very close to the building when in fact the fighter was between 200 and 300 feet away from the shoreline and nobody on the ground or in the building was in any danger .
