The World's Biggest Butterfly

The Atlas Moth has the largest wing
surface area of all Lepidoptera
(butterflies & moths). It is native to SE
Asian countries & India, particularly the
jungles of Malaysia and can vary in
colour a bit. This monster can only be
appreciated in person.

Strawberry Snake Cake

What you'll need
SHORTCAKE BISCUITS:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup margarine (1 stick)
1 cup milk
STRAWBERRY FILLING:
1 quart strawberries
4 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
WHIPPED CREAM TOPPING:
1 cup whipping cream
2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
GARNISHES:
4 whole strawberries
Green fruit leather
Mini chocolate chips or M&M's

HOW TO MAKE IT .

1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Sift
together the flour, sugar, baking powder
and salt into a large mixing bowl. Cut in
the margarine with a pastry cutter. Or
use a vegetable grater to grate the stick
into the mixing bowl and let your kids
take turns blending the margarine into
the dry ingredients with their fingertips.
Once the dough is crumbly, slowly stir in
the milk.
2. Turn out the dough onto a floured
working surface and gently roll or pat
the dough into a 1-inch-thick rectangle
(it should measure about 6 x 8 inches).
For the best results, handle the dough
as little as possible.
3. Slice the rectangle into four 1-1/2- x
8-inch strips. Place the strips on an
ungreased baking sheet, then let your
child mold and curve them into S shapes
that resemble snakes. Bake for 10 to 12
minutes until the bottoms are golden
brown. Transfer the baked shortcakes to
a wire rack (a parent's job) and let cool.
Carefully slice the cooled shortcakes in
half lengthwise or split them with a fork
and then set aside.
4. Wash the strawberries and let your
kids select four to use for the snakes'
heads. Slice the rest of the berries
lengthwise into a mixing bowl. Toss with
the confectioners' sugar and let stand
while you prepare the whipped cream.
5. Combine the whipping cream and
confectioners' sugar in a chilled bowl
and beat with an electric or hand mixer
until stiff peaks form.
6. Just before serving, arrange berries
on the bottom half of each shortcake,
then cover with the shortcake top.
Spread on whipped cream and add a
layer of sliced strawberry "scales."
7. For the snakes' heads, cut mouth
openings in the tips of the whole berries
and place one at the end of each
shortcake. Press a pair of mini chocolate
chip or M&M's eyes into the sides of
each head and add a forked tongue cut
from green fruit leather. Serves 4 .

Optical Illusion - Vanishing and Appearing Circles!

Stare at the '+' and notice the green
dot that circles around.... which is
actually the purple dots turning off in
turn. Stare for a little longer and
notice in your peripheral vision the
purple dots completely vanish! You
can expedite the process by using only
one eye.

This is an example of how the mind doesn't really 'see' in the peripheral but rather 'remembers" what was there or creates the image from slight eye movements. Actually, one last test is to very sligh

Monkey Orchids

These incredible looking flowers are
monkey orchids. There are two species
shown here, Dracula simia (the ones that
look like monkey faces) and Orchis simia
(which resemble little dancing monkeys).
Dracula simia are only found in the cloud
forests of southeastern Ecuador at
elevations of 1000 to 2000 meters and
their flowers smell likes ripe oranges.
Orchis simia are found in Europe, the
Mediterranean, Russia, Asia Minor and Iran
and the flowers smell strongly of feces!

Wanna learn how to make rainbow roses? - Video tutorial at the end!

STEP 1: Cut a perfect white rose from your
garden with 8-9inches stem or buy such.
STEP2: You need to have water soluble
colors. Choose four colors. Colors should
be much different from each other with
high contrast value. Do not choose both
blue and indigo but replace one with
violet. In the same way do not choose
both orange and red. I shall suggest these
combinations: RED-BLUE-GREEN-YELLOW,
VIOLET-RED-BLUE-YELLOW or YELLOW-
PURPLE-GREY-BLUE.
STEP3: Collect four cups or glasses filled
with water. Add color to the water and
steer well. Add drops of color until the
water becomes totally opaque. Four cups
will contain four different color solutions.
STEP4: Split the end part of the severed
stem. Use a knife or sharp blade to cut
lengthwise up to 6 inches.
STEP5: The four ends of the split stem is
now should be dipped into four color cups.
It should stand erect. Otherwise give
support to it.
STEP6: Wait for 24 hours and see the
magic. Look at the transformation of your
simple white rose! Now take it out. After
that bind the split ends using adhesive
tapes.

The Butterfly of the Sea...

The Red Gurnard (Chelidonichthys
spinosus)is one of 100 different species of
Sea Robins, or Gurnards. These fantastic
fish are normally found on the sea floor at
depths of around 660 ft. They have a
special set of ‘wings,’ which are actually
just beautiful pectoral fins, that allow them
to “fly” through the water. They also
possess six spiny feet that allow them to
walk across the ocean floor in search of
food.
Growing to around 30cm in length, I’d
have to say this is one of the most bizarre
and beautiful species of fish I’ve seen in a
while… and that’s saying something!
Habitat: Northwest Pacific (southern
Hokkaido, Japan southward to the South
China Sea)

Derinkuyu Ancient Underground City (Nevşehir, Turkey)

In 1963, during a simple renovation in the
town of Derinkuyu, a cave wall was
opened, revealing a passage way to an
underground city, thousands of years old,
extending more than 280 feet deep.
Derinkuyu is 13 stories, with 15,000 little
ventilation shafts that bring air to even the
deepest of levels. The number of rock
rooms that were found could hold over
20,000 Men Women and Children. There is
evidence of Religious centers, store rooms,
wine presses and stables for livestock.
Derinkuyu is the largest excavated
underground city in Turkey and is part of a
network of several underground complexes
found across Cappadocia.

The bejeweled bugs of Hubert Duprat

The common caddisfly is a moth-like insect,
found near lakes, streams, ponds and
rivers, and often used as a bait for trout
fishermen. Caddisfly larvae are aquatic,
and spin protective silk cases which
incorporate bits of material from their
surroundings, such as gravel, twigs or small
pieces of shell.
In this remarkable work, simply entitled
Caddis, French artist Hubert Duprat
(b.1957) has collaborated with caddis
larvae by gently placing them in an
environment full of gold, pearls and semi-
precious stones. The caddis then spin
these materials into their casings to
produce breathtaking jewel-encrusted
covers.
At once a clever scientific experiment
(which Duprat actually patented in the
1980s) and imaginative artistic gesture,
Duprat teases out the sublimely beautiful
potential of a common and rather dull-
looking insect. Although he gives much of
the credit to the larvae, I think his creative
intervention into nature is the product of a
truly beautiful imagination.

Chinese artist Huang Guofu paints using only his mouth and feet

Huang Guofu, China, suffered an accident
as a child which left him armless at the age
of 4. But he taught himself how to paint
with his feet at the age of 12, pulling
allnighters just to practice. He quit school
at 18 to have more time to paint and raise
money for medicine for his father’s illness.
After a while he also started using his
mouth to paint, in order to give his pieces
more detail. vice-curator of the newly
opened Chonqing Talents Museum. Now,
his paintings are sought by dealers and art
lovers around the World.

Algae lamps may soon light up streets!

Left photos:
“In 2010, scientists from Yansei and
Stanford University” inserted electrodes
“into the photosynthesising organs –
chloroplasts – of algal cells, thus managing
to draw a small electrical current from
algae during photosynthesis. As advances
in nanotechnology lead to increasingly
energy efficient products, plant life such as
algae will become attractive sources for
tapping energy.”
Right photos:
A most recent project by Thomson takes
another step toward practical applications
of light. The Trap Light uses
“photoluminescent pigments to capture
escaping light and convert waste energy
back into visible light.” In collaboration
with Gionata Gatto, Mike worked with a
special glass blowing technique to “embed
[these] pigments into the body of the
lamp.”

LED Shower Head with Temperature Sensor

Put a little color in the shower with this
temperature controlled color LED tap
sensor. The colors change automatically
with the water temperature. This shower
head fits onto most shower hoses and
lights up a set of LEDs when you turn on
the tap transforming the stream of water
into a beautiful waterfall of light.
A temperature sensor within the unit can
tell whether the water is cold or hot, and
changes the color of the light accordingly.
This is a great gadget just for the neat
color effect and especially for those with
kids to prevent them from scalding
themselves.

The happy faced spider (Theridion grallator)

Found only on the islands of Oahu,
Molokai, Maui, and Hawaii, the happy face
spider, such as this one guarding its eggs
on a leaf in Maui, is known for the unique
patterns that decorate its pale abdomen.
Scientists believe Theridion grallator may
have developed its distinctive markings to
discourage birds from eating it.

BABY ELEPHANT GETS AN ARTIFICIAL LEG

For the first time in Sri Lanka an artificial
leg had been given to a small baby
elephant. This baby elephant was
loitering in the jungle area of Ampara
when he had unfortunately trampled a
landmine placed by the LTTE and had
injured the left backmost leg very
seriously. Veterinary surgeons that
operated on this baby elephant could
not save the leg.
More Detail about baby Elephant
The baby elephant had been living with
difficulty due to the inability to move or
stand straight the baby elephant had
been thus severely handicapped.
However when this matter was known
to internationally renowned ‘Avas’
centre who are specialists in the
manufacture of artificial limbs, the ‘Avas’
centre had donated an artificial leg to
the baby and also had assisted in the
operation in fixing the leg. It was due to
the donation of this artificial leg and
assistance rendered during the
operation the baby elephant got this
relief. This baby elephant now can walk
with all of its legs.

THE LAW OF THE WILD SAYS KILL ONLY WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY

Photographer Michel Denis captured
these amazing pictures on safari in Kenya.
He was astounded by what he saw:
"These brothers have been living together
since they left their mother at about 18
months old, On the morning he saw
them, they seemed not to be hungry,
walking quickly but stopping sometimes
to play together. 'At one point, they met
a group of impala who ran away.. But one
youngster was not quick enough and the
brothers caught it easily'."

The main causes of liver damage .

The main causes of liver damage are~
1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late
are main cause.
2. Not urinating in the morning.
3. Too much eating.
4. Skipping breakfast.
5. Consuming too much medication.
6. Consuming too much preservatives,
additives, food coloring, and artificial
sweetener.
7.consuming alcohol.
8. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As
much as possible reduce cooking oil use
when frying, which includes even the best
cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume
fried foods when you are tired, except if
the body is very fit.
9. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also
add to the burden of liver. Fried veggies
should be finished in one sitting, do not
store. We should prevent this without
necessarily spending more. We just have
to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating
habits. Maintaining good eating habits and
time condition are very important for our
bodies to absorb and get rid of
unnecessary chemicals according
to'schedule.'
